It’s that time again. Master’s week. The heralded Augusta National opened today with practice rounds of the games best, both past and present. The cool thing about practice day is it’s the only day that Augusta allows guest golfers. Not just anyone can play, only invited guests of past champions. I would be elated if one day in my life someone presented me with tickets just to walk the grounds. That would be awesome.
So, to welcome Master’s week I decided that for the first time in 17 years that it was time to pick up a new set of clubs. For 17 years I played Ping Eye 2 black dots and I must say they served me well. But, in my last outing and a few mishits later I knew that technology had so far advanced since I last purchased clubs that I figured I’d give it a shot.
I went to my local Golf Galaxy and started looking around. At first I thought I might be loyal to Ping and started looking over their latest lines. But, I remembered reading online about the Titleist AP line, the AP1’s and the AP2’s. So, after asking the clerk where I might find these I walked over and picked out the 7 iron. He then asked if I cared to hit it. Of course I obliged and we walked back to the simulator area and taped up the face. I warmed up with a few PW’s of another club in the simulator area and was ready to start taking a few hacks. From the first hit, I knew, these would be my next clubs. Although I was hitting well worn out simulator range balls, full of cuts, scratches, nicks and the sort, it felt like I was hitting butter. Every shot felt so pure, so smooth, not to mention the simulator was telling me the 7 iron was going 165-170 average over about 10 shots. I was fitted for the clubs and out the door I went complete with new AP1’s, new bag, and a confidence I hadn’t felt in awhile. NOW, if only it would translate to the course.
I had my first round just this past Saturday, 4/4/09. The course was still wet but I was raring to go. It took me a few holes to really loosen up but when I did it was over. I played the final four holes out in -1. I came back in at +3 only to have an OB penalty kill me off a horrible tee shot. Overall, I would say the new Titleist AP1’s improved my score by about 8-10 strokes. I haven’t felt confidence like this behind the ball in years, seriously YEARS! The feel is incredible, the shot shaping ability is unbelievable, the distance control is second to none. I would rate these 5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend if you are an avid golfer, who’s looking for a nice change to pick up these irons. You’ll be amazed at the change you will experience.
