Phil, the 12th called….. they’ve got your ball

Wow! That is all I can say. The modern day dream pairing of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson and the final round at The Masters. I don’t know about you but it just doesn’t get any better than that. Take this for instance, a relative stops by to enjoy Easter dinner and his sport is BMX riding. He suddenly becomes a huge fan of golf for a day, or perhaps the most historic front nine at Augusta in anyone’s memory. Was that not incredible or what?

Phil Mickelson was just lights out. The shot shaped at 7 was by far the most impressive golf shot I’ve seen in a long time leaving a simple tap in for birdie. Truly remarkable almost holing a shot he shaped around the pines. What first appeared could result in bogey from the tee ended up merely a tap in. Everything appeared to be going his way as he headed out in a record tying 30 on the front nine. That was, until a costly mistake that ultimately cost him what should have been the championship Sunday at Augusta National.

The 12th, Golden Bell as it’s named, the midway point and a daunting little par 3 of “Amen Corner.” Tiger had honors and stuck his tee shot safely on the green hoping to make up a shot on Phil. Lefty was sure to follow at best leaving himself a chance for par. 9 iron he chose, sit it just up in the middle of the green. Crowd quiets and Mickelson steps up to address the ball. Mid swing, something in his head must have said either wrong club, or, rifle this bad boy in. The swing was abrupt, and pretty much 3/4 as his divot flew out from the club. Staring it down and Vern is goin nuts! “Oh boy, gotta get up, gotta get up………. oh boy.” Faldo gives a shout, “what was he thinking?” PHIL!!!!! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!!!!! You are the best in the world now. Stick that ball up there, get your par, and move on. Instead, the legendary Rae’s Creek received his Callaway Tourix. From there, it was on to Kenny Perry who controlled his own fate ultimately to defeat himself. Angel Cabrera is your 2009 Masters champion.
